Patience. Precision. Repetition.

Mastering home espresso comes down to the same fundamentals regardless of your machine: a consistent grind, an accurate dose, an even tamp, and a calibrated pull. Espresso rewards repetition and punishes shortcuts. Once dialed in, a well-pulled shot of single-origin espresso is one of the most complex, concentrated flavor experiences in coffee.

What You Need

  • Espresso machine
  • Burr grinder (espresso-capable)
  • Digital scale
  • Portafilter and basket
  • Tamper
  • Clean dry cloth

Step by Step

01

Clean the Portafilter

Wipe the portafilter basket thoroughly with a dry cloth. Residual grounds or oils from a previous shot will negatively affect extraction.

02

Grind and Dose

Grind fine — like powdered sugar. Dose 14–18g depending on your basket. Weigh consistently — dose variation is taste variation.

03

Distribute Evenly

Create a perfectly level, gap-free bed of coffee in the basket. Gaps cause channeling, which causes sour notes.

04

Tamp Firmly

Press the tamper down with firm, even pressure until you feel full resistance. The puck should be level and compact.

05

Purge and Lock In

Run the grouphead briefly to flush residuals, then lock the portafilter in firmly.

06

Pull the Shot

Start the timer the moment you start the pull. Target 25–35 seconds, yielding ~2.5× the coffee weight. Too fast = sour (grind finer). Too slow = bitter (grind coarser).

07

Knock and Clean Immediately

Remove the portafilter, knock the puck into a knockbox, and wipe the basket clean. A clean setup is the foundation of consistent espresso.

Pro Tips

  • Grind adjustment is everything — change in tiny half-step increments.
  • Use beans roasted 2–4 weeks ago. Espresso is unforgiving of stale coffee.
  • Pre-infusion improves extraction evenness significantly if your machine supports it.
  • Keep a brew log — dose, yield, time, taste. It turns dialing in from frustrating to methodical.

The right coffee makes every method taste better.
