Auto Drip

The Most Underestimated Method

The everyday brew, elevated.

Auto drip is how most of us first encountered coffee, and it remains the most common brewing method in American homes. The machine does most of the work — but the variables you control make an enormous difference. Getting the ratio right, grinding fresh, and using a machine that reaches proper brewing temperature elevates drip coffee from background noise to something genuinely worth tasting.

What You Need

  • Auto drip machine
  • Burr grinder
  • Digital scale
  • Paper basket filter
  • Fresh filtered water

Step by Step

01

Weigh the Water

Measure water by weight — not by the machine’s cup markings. Those markings vary wildly. Use a 1:17 ratio (e.g. 500g water for 29g coffee).

02

Weigh and Grind

Grind medium — coarser than pour over, finer than French press. Even distribution matters: an uneven bed extracts unevenly.

03

Load the Filter

Place a paper filter in the basket. Add ground coffee and level it gently. No mounds, no gaps.

04

Enable the Bloom Function

If your machine has a pre-infusion or bloom setting, enable it. This allows CO₂ to escape before full extraction, dramatically improving flavor.

05

Brew and Wait

Start the machine. Do not pour from the carafe until the entire brew cycle is complete — coffee develops flavor throughout the entire process. Pulling early gives you the weakest part of the brew.

06

Serve Immediately

Pour and serve as soon as the cycle finishes. Coffee degrades quickly on a hot plate. If holding, use a thermal carafe only.

Pro Tips

  • Monthly descaling is not optional — mineral buildup destroys brew temperature accuracy.
  • A good burr grinder matters more than a good machine. Invest in the grinder first.
  • The SCA Certified Home Brewer list is the best resource for machine selection.
  • If your water tastes bad, your coffee will too. Use filtered water always.

The right coffee makes every method taste better.
